Nutritional Therapy involves the use of food and lifestyle management to improve one’s health. The type of nutritional therapy I practice adheres to the principles of Functional Medicine.
Functional Medicine uses an individualised, patient-centred, science-based approach that empowers patient and practitioner to work together to address underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. In Functional Medicine, we identify and address the root cause of a condition. One condition, many causes. One cause, many conditions!
Modern medicine is absolutely incredible. However, the majority of interventions are not preventative. In Nutritional Therapy, we aim to correct imbalances that occur before they turn into disease. That painful bloating you get a couple of times a week? That eczema you suffer with? That brain fog that clouds your focus? These are all signs of imbalances that we can work on in Nutritional Therapy.
Of course, we can also help in the presence of disease. Prevention is the gold standard.
I'm often asked, 'What is Nutritional Therapy and who is it for?'. In this blog post, I aim to offer some clarity on this life-changing practise!
In advance of the initial consultation, clients are sent a questionnaire. This questionnaire poses questions about their goal, current presenting symptoms, history, food preferences, lifestyle. A three-day food diary is also sent.
Analysis of client history includes family history, whether the client was born by caesarian or trans-vaginally, any history of food poisoning, antibiotic usage, contraceptive pill usage, trauma, major surgery, previous restrictive diets and much more. All relevant pieces of information and symptoms are plotted on a timeline to aid analysis of triggers of poor health.
Testing will be suggested if appropriate. This testing may be done via NHS or it may be a test that is not available on the NHS, such as a comprehensive stool analysis (gut health) or a DUTCH test (hormones). In Nutritional Therapy, there is a saying, ‘test, don’t guess’. Testing informs the protocol.
Devision of a program is a collaborative effort. We look at preferred foods, disliked foods, who cooks the food in the house, working hours, proximity to a kitchen at work, social life considerations. In my practise, Nutritional Therapy is more about the addition of healthful foods, rather than the restriction of others. Supplements may be recommended depending on the individual case.
Some concerns that may be discussed: Brain fog, poor sleep, food intolerances, hay fever, weight management, anxiety, low mood, skin conditions, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances such as PCOS and Endometriosis, low energy and more!
For some clients, two sessions will be enough. For other clients - depending on how quick the client is willing to make changes and the complexity of concerns, it can take longer.
The first step is to hop on a no-strings-attached discovery call to see if we are a good fit. Contact me at info@sophietrotmannutrition.com to book!
